For a preschool classroom, decorations are a key component of having a dynamic and engaging environment! This is where children will spend a good amount of time each day, so make sure the surroundings are full of interesting visuals for them to take in!
For the mainstays, include the basics you will be covering on a daily basis. Here we would laminate the alphabet, numbers, the days of the week and the months of the year. The names of colours and shapes would also be part of this group. These fundamental concepts are placed around the Circle Time area of the classroom, as are discussed there most often. However, lining the classroom’s walls with colourful flash cards of these concepts is also a great way to reinforce these ideas.
Special occasions are a great way to change up the decorations in the classroom. To get kids excited about the upcoming occasion or holiday, make sure to have decorations up early in anticipation of the event. Throughout the year, there are many fun events to decorate for such as: Back-to-School, Mid-Autumn Festival, China’s National Holiday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Spring Festival, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Earth Day, Mother’s Day, Children’s Day, and Father’s Day. You can even get the kids involved in helping to create some cool decorations for the holidays to hang up!
As for where and what to decorate, there are many options. Here is where you can get creative. Throughout the years at Busy Bee, we have seen doors get transformed, hanging ornaments, posters and even cut-out decorations for kids to take selfies in! It’s fun to get excited about events and having decorations around the classroom help with engaging children. You can also hang the weekly art projects in an area where the children can see what they’ve made that week. It also adds to the ambience of a preschool classroom!
Finally, another space to decorate would be the birthday wall! Everyone loves a birthday party and keeping track of everyone’s birthday is fun and makes students (and teachers) feel special on their special day! Create cute paper cupcakes or candles to display on the birthday wall with everyone’s birthdays.
