Why We Love Dr. Seuss

Come see the BUZZ!

Growing up, we will encounter many children’s books that help with learning to read. Some we may forget, but others stay with us for a long time. One such talented author who has been entertaining us through his quirky and imaginative books for decades is Dr. Seuss, and boy, do we love him!

Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American author of children’s books, a political cartoonist and an animator. He is best recognized under his pen name, Dr. Seuss. He wrote more than 60 books under that name including the famous Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

There are innumerous reasons we love Dr. Seuss, but here are our main three:

Reason #1: Rhyme and Repeat

His books rhyme in a great lyrical way, which makes them easier to read, as kids will anticipate words as they start reading. He also makes great use of high frequency words in his books for early readers. Some of his books also incorporate repeating lines, which is also beneficial for young readers. His books are a great introduction to reading!

Reason #2: Tongue Twisters

As young readers start to develop their skills, some sounds and phrases may not be encountered as much with other books. Dr. Seuss creates very interesting characters and word phrases that really test your ability to speak with different sounds and words together, almost like a tongue twister or a tongue workout! This is great practice for speaking and testing out what we can say. A great example is the book Fox in Socks. This book is a real tongue tester!

Reason #3: Great Messages

Probably the biggest reason why we love Dr. Seuss is because of the messages the books bring. He teaches valuable lessons in his longer stories, which is great to instill in young children everywhere. Some of our favourite ones are: The Lorax, Horton Hears a Who!, and Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

We love Dr. Seuss and are sure you will too if you haven’t already read his stories. They are a great addition to any home library and we highly recommend them to encourage a love of reading in children young and old!
